The good and bad of hearing breast cancer stories
As soon as I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I scoured the internet for others with breast cancer. I wanted to read as many breast cancer stories as possible. It was comforting to know that there were survivors with the same type of cancer (triple positive) as me.
I even looked up when hair grows back and there are youtube videos on that as well.
I found all of those ladies so inspiring. it takes a lot of guts to show how vulnerable cancer can make you but that they could persevere.
Inspiration from breast cancer stories
I was most touched by a young lady named Rosie in England who wrote a blog about her cancer journey. Unfortunately, she did not survive. She had triple-negative breast cancer and I’m told that the medical community is still trying to figure out the best method to treat it.
Rosie’s blog is amazing though. She chronicles her diagnosis all the way through her chemo and even to the day she ended up back at the hospital after having caught a bug while traveling. It was this virus or infection that her liver could not take.
Even though Rosie’s cancer journey is a sad one, you can tell that she was full of life and love.
I found myself balling reading through her blog posts. Yes it’s sad because you know she doesn’t survive but, honestly, I came across quite a few stories like that (too many, really), so that wasn’t what hit home for me.
It was the way she let us into her head and heart during her cancer journey. It was as if my best friend was talking to me. I never knew Rosie. But I miss her.
Who could’ve guessed that someone an ocean away would have such an emotional impact on a total stranger? I’m so glad she and others shared their stories.
Bravery in the face of uncertainty
I have a breast cancer buddy who prefers not to read about anyone who died because of their cancer. Although I completely understand wanting to focus only on the good outcomes. I like to read all the stories because it not only gives me a more realistic picture of what could happen to me but also shows me the extraordinary lives of women who were unafraid of life’s end.
They lived and loved despite their prognosis. And that’s really inspirational to me.
How about you? What stories have inspired you on your breast cancer journey?
